MAINTENANCE

Tips to keep jewellery beautiful

Each piece from Atelier Smeijsters is made with the aim of lifelong quality. Taking care of jewellery is easy and there are a few steps you can take to ensure your jewellery lasts a lifetime. If you are ever worried about the maintenance or the state of your jewellery, feel free to get in touch.

It is recommended to take off all jewellery before showering, exercising, gardening, swimming, heavy work etc. Do not wear jewellery whilst sleeping, put jewellery back on after bathing, applying lotions, cosmetics and hair sprays and after spraying perfumes. Avoid chemical cleaning agents, abrasives and chlorine. A combination of mild soap, warm water and a soft toothbrush can be used to clean the jewellery. You can also soak the jewellery for half an hour to remove more persistent dirt.

GEMSTONES

Do not use chemical cleaning agents on gemstones. A mild detergent such as dish soap mixed with warm water can be used with a soft toothbrush to scrub around the stone to clean it and restore its brilliance. Most of the harder gemstones can take a lot, but the softer gemstones such as opals and turquoises should not be worn in hot tubs or natural water sources, as they can cause irreparable damage.

Gold and platinum are some of the least reactive metals there are. However, I recommend following the aforementioned tips. Prongs in settings may weaken over time (5-15 years). They can also get stuck on clothing, and shocks can loosen the stone. Therefore, it is advisable to check the ring for wear once every 2 years. With more sensitive jewellery, the frequency is different and this is always discussed.

INSURANCE

It is recommended to clean and check jewellery regularly. It is advisable to have jewellery assessed by Atelier Smeijsters annually, so that repair recommendations can be made. If the recommended repairs are not carried out or are performed by parties not approved by us, the warranty will become void. We are not responsible for damaged jewellery due to wear and tear or repairs and alterations made by other jewellers.

It is advisable to insure jewellery with a reputable insurance company and check the covered value.

By having the jewellery appraised, you will get the right compensation if you have to make a claim to your insurance company. Have your jewellery appraised by a local reputable appraiser every few years to ensure that it accurately reflects the true value of your jewellery collection. We will gladly provide a review on your behalf for each piece of jewellery. You only have to bring the jewel and the rest will be taken care of by us. The cost is EUR 150. Feel free to get in touch should you have any questions.
